Science Director for Genetic Rescue

Employer:  Revive & Restore
Job Number:  7046415
Date Posted:  03/04/2017
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

**** Help pioneer new applications of conservation genomics****
Revive & Restore’s science director will work with some of the world’s leading molecular biologists, conservation biologists, and conservation organizations to develop pioneering, proof-of-concept genetic rescue projects using cutting-edge genomic technologies to solve previously intractable wildlife conservation challenges such as those posed by inbreeding, exotic diseases, climate change, and destructive invasive species.

The science director will be responsible for developing Revive & Restore’s growing range of services, including: “genetic insight” (state-of-the-art genomic analysis for in situ and ex situ population and ecosystem level management and monitoring), cryopreservation of cell cultures from at-risk wild populations, advanced reproductive techniques (mammalian cloning), and advanced gene-editing techniques for population health and facilitated adaptation.

--About Revive & Restore
Revive & Restore is a Sausalito, California-based nonprofit. Our core team has spent the past four years working with 150 scientists to develop the emerging field of biotechnology-based genetic rescue, acting as a catalyst, a facilitator, and a coordinator.

Our mission is to develop and apply genomic technologies for conservation, specifically for endangered and extinct species, with the overall goal of enhancing global biodiversity and ecosystem health. To do so, we work with a wide range of professionals ranging from conservation biologists, molecular biologists, veterinarians, to bio-ethicists and communications experts.

We are perhaps best known for our long-term projects that aim to bring species back from extinction by using gene editing techniques—including the passenger pigeon, the heath hen, and the woolly mammoth. However, the more important part of our mission is developing and applying genetic tools to help prevent species extinction.

Revive & Restore partners with major academic laboratories and biotech companies to provide commercial-quality genetic rescue services to clients such as conservation organizations, government departments (in the U.S. and abroad), and zoos and captive-breeding programs, among others.

--Job Responsibilities

1) Genetic Innovation:
• Understand and follow the evolving role of genomic technologies in conservation in order to identify emerging technologies with potential application for conservation solutions.
• Collaborate with science advisors to develop a suite of services to be offered as part of a 21st century toolkit for conservation.
• In collaboration with the Executive Director, take responsibility to identify, build, and maintain relationships and relevant partnerships in order to translate opportunities into concrete projects and collaborations.
2) Project Scoping and Development:
• Evaluate client needs and pair those needs with genomic solutions.
• Provide clients with technical guidance regarding innovative genomic solutions from next-generation sequencing to genome engineering that will optimize the project’s feasibility and ecological impact.
• Determine the funding requirements and implementation barriers for each project (e.g. social license and regulatory pathways) and identify potential strategies to navigate those barriers.
3) Project management
• Assemble and manage the team that will be required to achieve success for each project.
• Act as a liaison between clients, project management team, and contractors to ensure the project goal is aligned with all stakeholder needs and expectations.
• Prepare and manage project budgets and schedules for on-spec, on-budget and on-time performance.
• Communicate, document, and archive project activities

--Requirements

The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial and problem-solving mindset, matched with significant experience working in cutting-edge science. We are seeking highly motivated individuals with graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) or equivalent qualification (significant relevant work experience equivalent to post-graduate degree experience).

A broad understanding of genomics and conservation is essential, as is previous laboratory experience in population or conservation genomics. Field experience in conservation is a plus (working with private land owners, NGOs, local state agencies, and/or federal agencies).

Relevant science fields include comparative genomics, functional genomics, population genomics, ancient DNA, bioinformatics, ecology and evolutionary biology, wildlife/veterinary health, developmental biology, reproductive biology, and genome engineering. A broad understanding of genomics and at least two of the other stated fields are essential; actual laboratory experience in one or more of the relevant fields is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants whose experience spans both the fields of genomics and wildlife conservation.

The candidate should be a team player with excellent communication skills, leadership ability, initiative, sound judgment, and creative originality.

Experience in conceiving, planning, budgeting and managing projects is also required.

--Salary: Commensurate with experience.

--Start Date: As soon as possible. (This is a new position.)

--How to Apply:
Please submit your application to jobs@reviverestore.org. Applications that do not include all four of the following items will not be considered:

1) A cover letter addressed to our Executive Director
2) Your C.V. attached as a PDF
3) References: list at least two previous supervisors or academic/ professional references on your C.V.
4) A 1-page vision statement (PDF) on the ways in which biotechnology could benefit biodiversity conservation.
