The opportunity

  • Join an enthusiastic team of STEM researchers
  • Bring your experience in physics or potential fields geophysics
  • Three year, full time position based in Perth, WA

CSIRO Mineral Resources (CMR) is one of the largest minerals research and development groups globally, with a proud track record in delivering innovation and solutions across the mineral resources value chain. We thrive on innovation harnessed by the diversity in our teams, supporting individuals to create a dynamic career path leveraging their lived experiences and identity in an inclusive environment. We apply our expert knowledge and specialised research to provide innovation that solves the complex problems faced by minerals companies, mining equipment, technology, and services (METS) companies, government, and other industry stakeholders.

The CMR Discovery Program aims to be a truly diverse team that reflects the diversity that we see in society, and comprises an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team of STEM researchers, all focused on developing new technologies and concepts for exploration through cover and advancing orebody knowledge.

You will be a key member of the program and have the opportunity to work as part of our group of researchers.

As the Potential Fields Geophysicist, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary group of CSIRO researchers and external clients, including industry, CRCs, and other government agencies, on research relevant to the mineral exploration industry. In this role, you will be focused on advancing processing, modelling and interpretation of potential field data and developing methods to handle and integrate other geophysical (e.g., EM, seismic, MT) and geoscience data sets. You will use these data to inform the geological understanding and derived interpretations for exploration through covered regions in various geological settings from regional to prospect scale

The position would suit an early career researcher experienced in the field of physics or potential fields geophysics.

Your duties will include:

  • Investigate geophysical data at a range of scales, focusing on advancing processing, inversion, and interpretation of these data within a geological context.
  • Integrate geophysics and other complementary datasets, in 1D, 2D and 3D, to develop novel methods for data analysis, integration and product derivation.
  • Apply knowledge of geophysics to process, analyse and interpret potential field geophysical data sets, and integrate findings with other geophysical and geological data sets and interpretations.
  • Draw on professional expertise, knowledge of multiple disciplines (e.g., geology, geophysics, mineralogy, geochemistry, remote sensing) and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.
  • Contribute to existing research programs with innovative solutions and contribute to project leadership, where required.
  • Work with, and contribute to, the development of innovative methods for processing and interpreting geophysical data.
  • Other duties as directed

Location: Kensington, Perth, WA

Salary:  AU$110k to AU$119k pa + 15.4% super

Tenure:  3 year specified term

Reference:  96086

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in the field of physics or potential fields geophysics.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and/or reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative, and innovative research by generating novel ideas and pursuing solutions to relevant scientific problems.
  • Understanding of the fundamental principles of gravity and magnetism.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis and interpretation of magnetic and gravity data.
  • Ability to integrate geophysical interpretations with other complementary geoscience data sets, e.g., geology, geochemistry, petrophysics.

Desirable

  • Post-doctoral research in the field of potential fields geophysics.
  • Understanding other geophysical techniques (e.g., radiometrics, EM, seismic, MT), and issues for their integration with potential field data.
  • Experience using magnetic and gravity forward modelling and inversion software, e.g., UBC-GIF Suite, VP Geophysics Suite, CGG GeoTools, ModelVision Pro.
