Job Description

We invite you to apply for a postdoctoral appointee position within our Materials Science Division (MSD). The research project aims at exploration of the structural and dynamical properties of quantum materials and relaxor ferroelectrics. 

In this role you will:

  • Conduct experimental work involves synthesis and crystal growth of relaxor ferroelectrics and transition metal oxides followed by characterization of their physical properties. 
  • Complete detailed structural studies involving neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements, particularly focusing on diffuse scattering will be performed.
  • Investigate lattice dynamics and their relationship to observed properties will be performed. 
  • Results will be published in refereed journals, and oral presentations will be made at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars. 
  • Maintain up-to-date awareness of developments in the relevant areas of research.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • Primary expertise in solid-state physics, materials science, or solid-state chemistry.
  • Experience with bulk ceramic synthesis and high temperature solid state reactions.
  • Experience with single crystal growth of oxides
  • A background performing chemical analysis, x-ray and/or neutron diffraction, and in performing characterization measurements, such as dielectric permittivity, magnetometry, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements is highly desirable.
  • The candidate is expected to creatively think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists and materials scientists.
  • The following majors are NOT considered in this position: nanoscience, thin film growth, and organic or bio-related areas.
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemistry, or equivalent.
  • Candidate must have good written and oral communication skills and work well with others in a team oriented environment.


This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work with a variety of synthetic techniques in high temperature solid state reactions and crystal growth. The work will also include a variety of physical measurements such as dielectric permittivity, magnetometry, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, neutron scattering, and x-ray scattering measurements.
