Position Summary

Responsible for supervising all activities in the Blood Bank.  Responsibilities include writing Standard Operating Procedures, reviewing quality control records, reviewing antibody identification panels, serving as 24/7 resource when on call, evaluating staff performance and participating in hiring and termination decisions.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Supervises operational workflow
  • Maintain, update and revise the department’s SOPs as new methods and regulatory requirements are introduced. Develops, validates and implements new procedures.
  • Reviews logs used for processing blood products. Reviews temperature graphs, test results and antibody panels.
  • Performs Donor Deferral and Notification process including maintaining files of donors with unacceptable testing results.
  • Coverage
  • Prepares staff work schedule for day, evening and graveyard shifts.
  • Technical support
  • Serves as 24 hour technical on-call resource when scheduled.
  • Budget
  • Assists in the containment of medical center costs through appropriate ordering of blood, reagents and lab supplies and recovery of patient charges. Verifies blood and reagent invoices for accuracy in billing.
  • Reports
  • Compiles data for monthly reports and departmental quality indicators.
  • Equipment
  • Writes equipment validation plans; performs validation and staff training.
  • Personnel
  • Assists with evaluation of staff performance.  Assists in the selection of staff; orients and trains new hires.
  • Performs employee counseling when appropriate. Assists in the hiring and termination decisions.
  • Continuing Education
  • Coordinates continuing education programs and ensures that records and in-house training are maintained.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years experience in a hospital Transfusion Service or SBB certification preferred

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • California CLS license
