Job Description

Summary

The Research technician I in this position will provide support for experimental services provided by the BCM zebrafish core, that includes basic molecular biology and experiments using zebrafish. The technician will perform experiments using zebrafish, document results of experiments, and keep track of experiments and their progress for core directors and core users. Experience working with zebrafish is preferred but not required. The department will train a suitable candidate who lacks zebrafish experience.

Job Duties

  • Carries out independent experimental work that includes zebrafish embryo whole mount in situ hybridization, in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation of sperm samples, molecular assays including recombinant DNA cloning and PCR, tissue histology and microscopy, data analysis and generating figures.
  • Plans and organizes administrative operations of the laboratory.
  • Oversees lab inventory and supplies. Maintains lab stock solutions.
  • Establishes procedures for use of laboratory equipment that includes maintenance and repair. 
  • Performs zebrafish core colony maintenance.
  • Performs experiments using zebrafish.
  • Documents results of experiments.
  • Keeps track of experiments and their progress for core directors and core users.
  • Maintains and propagates zebrafish strains.
  • Collects embryos for experiments.
  • Performs fin clips and genotyping.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience handling and working with zebrafish.
  • Experience with CRISPR mutagenesis.
  • Experience with cloning plasmid DNA (using Gateway recombination, Gibson assembly or similar).
  • Experience with histology and imaging. Experience performing PCR, nucleic acid purification, and making/diluting laboratory solutions.
  • Proficiency with FileMaker database software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Able to lift and move 15 pound objects (zebrafish tanks full of water). Be comfortable working in a 28 degree Celsius room with high humidity. Be comfortable working with, handling, and euthanizing zebrafish. We will train an appropriate candidate to perform these tasks.
