Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is currently seeking an Assistant Computational Scientist to join the Data Science and Learning (DSL) division. In this role you can expect to:

  • Apply and develop high performance computing and machine learning techniques to research problems in the life sciences with an emphasis on using computational approaches for detecting sequence patterns in a variety of contexts including biomedical community (next generation sequencing) datasets.
  • Develop and apply computational models and informatics methods like variant calling on whole genome and SNP array datasets, apply the methods to understand, quantify the genetic effects on various disease areas including cancer, cardiovascular diseases and suicide ideation.
  • Create new strategies to scale existing techniques to leadership computing facilities, provides quantitative measures required to submit proposals, and participates in interdisciplinary discussions aimed at the design of new experiments.
  • Problems typically involve the construction of computational models for phenotype and/or class prediction from genomic sequence data and other genomics data, performing large-scale genomics analyses on leadership class computing facilities, creating reusable, high performance software libraries and applying and developing deep learning models to multi-modal biomedical data.
  • Report on results of research including publishing scholarly papers in scientific journals, giving presentations at conferences, meetings, and seminars.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports and proposals required by funding agencies to obtain and continue funding support.

Position Requirements

  • A recent or soon-to-be completed PhD (typically within 3 years) in bioinformatics, computer science, biology, or related field
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics methods, machine learning and/or statistics required
  • Knowledge of high performance computing tools, libraries and FPU programming is required 
  • Knowledge of creating parallel code optimized on high performance computing using OpenMP or Intel one API is required
  • Bioinformatics analysis techniques and tools (fluency in python is preferred)
  • Experience processing NGS sequence data
  • Understanding of computational algorithms to support DNA sequence alignment, small nucleotide polymorphism detection
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to think independently and innovatively to develop exceptional technical solutions required
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required
  • Ability to write research reports and publications required
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team required
  • Considerable collaborative skills, including the ability to interact well with external collaborators

  • RD2: Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 3+ years of experience, or a PhD and 0+ years of experience, or equivalent
