Job Description

Summary

Performs gross dissection of surgical specimens, selecting appropriate tissue to be submitted for histologic review and dictating verbal reports regarding the specimens.

This position is located in Odessa, Texas.   

Job Duties

  • Dictates accurate and precise gross descriptions in a clear, complete, sufficient manner.
  • Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards for the section as determined by the section director or laboratory director.
  • Photographs specimens for documentation and maintains digital photography database.
  • Knowledge of scanning and creating digital images for pathology review.
  • Completes overflow cases from other peripheral hospitals as needed. Available to provide coverage at other Baylor College of Medicine entities as needed.
  • Instructs and advises residents, grossing technicians, and pathologist assistants on pathology techniques and procedures.
  • Reviews all grossing reports daily.
  • Prepares quality assurance cancer protocol
  • Prepares Grossing schedule and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Provides coverage during evenings and/or weekends as determined by the section director or laboratory director.
  • Provides coverage when grossing personnel is out.
  • Ensures compliance with CAP and CLIA regulations and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Remains current with written protocols and procedure manuals, and capable of developing and writing new protocols and procedures.
  • Utilizes all available work time by assisting others and performing additional task as appropriate. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a NAACLS approved Pathologist’s Assistant program.
  • Six months of relevant experience.
  • Certified as a Pathologist’s Assistant by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP-PA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Experience with computer systems.
