Job Description
Summary
The individual filling this position will primarily provide clinical genetic counseling services to patients for a wide variety of preconception and prenatal indications. The approved candidate will provide clinical genetic counseling services to patients for a wide variety of indications of genetic risks in pregnancy, as part of the Texas Children’s Maternal Fetal Medicine department.
Clinic Locations:
- TCH Pavilion for Woman and Community TCH MFM Clinics (Methodist, Sugarland, Katy, Northwest, Woodlands).
- TCH/MFM-Telemedicine Clinics-Baytown and Lufkin and will be a mixture of tele-genetic and in person counseling.
Job Duties
- Counsels patients with indications of genetic risks in pregnancy or in preconception settings. Examples of indications can include teratogenic exposures, prenatal genetic screening and follow-up of abnormal screening results, family history of abnormalities or genetic conditions, and current pregnancies with fetal abnormalities. Opportunities to provide counseling for additional indications will also be available, if desired.
- Conducts preliminary research such as; family and patient medical histories, coordination of genetic testing, and review of patient referrals.
- Provides short-term psychosocial support and counseling to patients.
- Releases and discusses results of genetic testing with patients and providers
- Drafts and sends letter to patients summarizing the genetic counseling session. Letters are sent to the patient and referring physician.
- Answers patient calls and assesses need for services.
- Refers clients to appropriate agencies and physicians as needed.
- Assists physicians in all aspects of clinic activity. Other support as requested.
- Acts as liaison between patients, physicians and other health care providers.
- Supervises genetic counseling interns, genetics residents, medical students, MFM fellows, and REI fellows on their genetics rotation.
- Gives presentations and lectures on genetics-related topics.
- Provides training and education about Genetic services to other teams.
- Performs clinical research.
- Attends various conferences and meetings monthly.
- Takes part in the training of genetic counseling students through the BCM genetic counseling training program.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.
- No experience required.
- Board-eligible or Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
