JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for Senior Systems Engineers to join our Agile Systems Engineering (ASE) group of the Materials & Manufacturing Office (MMO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.
The mission of the ASE group is to conduct research, design, and application of advanced engineering development methodologies supporting the introduction of new warfighter capability at the speed of relevance. Focus is on rapid development of complex engineering systems requiring the inclusion and integration of cross-disciplinary solutions and expertise. Core mission areas include:
Expert application of traditional systems engineering techniques for the development of complex systems; with an emphasis on streamlined and/or tailored processes
Introduction and application of digital engineering methodologies such as Modeling & Simulation, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and Digital Twins
Approaches for Rapid Prototyping as a means of concept assessment, risk reduction, and accelerated capability fielding
Utilization of agile development methods including DevSecOps for continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD) software pipelines, and application to all facets of complex system development
Development and application of methods for measuring and assessing the performance of the system development process
You will:
Provide hands-on leadership of multi-disciplinary project teams, and technical management of research and development programs
Design and implement cutting edge technologies as part of the research and development of complex engineering systems
Serve as a technical expert on some of the Nation’s most complex technical challenges, as well as a mentor, educator, and team leader
Collaborate within ASE and across ARL in the development of new programs and technologies
Non-tenure faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred in an Engineering or a science based discipline, plus 14 years related experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.
Required skills/experience areas include:
Documented success executing Research & Development and Systems Engineering functions on large, complex DOD development programs
Success in an environment, where various forms of communication skills were crucial to be effective (verbal and written); be dependable, responsive, curious, collaborative, and possess high level interpersonal skills
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or Computer Science/Engineering, plus 7 years related experience
Technical program management; ideally as a Principal Investigator at an academic institution such as an UARC or FFRDC
Digital Acquisition and Digital Engineering strategy and implementation
Strong technical background in any of the following: modeling & simulation, software development, network communications, open system architecture, energy & power systems, mechanical design & analysis, electrical design & analysis, test & evaluation, and autonomous systems
Active government security clearance
Your working location will be predominantly on-site at our offices in State College, PA. Periodic travel (up to 25%) may also be required for attendance at program meetings and/or in support of field testing or exercises.
