Principal Investigator, Peter Heeger, MD, is looking for a Project Scientist to join the team!

Dr. Peter Heeger is the Director of the Transplant Immunology Program. Scientists in this program are studying mechanisms underlying immune rejection of donor tissues and graft-versus-host responses and developing novel strategies to prevent and treat these conditions.

The Project Scientist works independently and in cooperation with the Principal Investigator to make significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in any academic field. The position may be an ongoing member of a research team or may be employed for a limited period of time to contribute high-level skills to a specific research program. This role is not required to carry out independent research or to develop an independent research reputation and do not have teaching responsibilities. Ordinarily, this position will carry out research or creative programs as well as administration of day-to-day lab operations with supervision by a member of the Professorial Series.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, submissions, publications, and presentations but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • May serve as PI for certain grants.
  • May participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author.
  • May develop, adapt and implement new techniques and protocols.
  • Assists in lab experiments, analyzes, interprets, summarizes, and compiles data.
  • May lead or train Staff Research Associates and Research Fellows.
  • Appointees on an academic trajectory will be encouraged to commit a portion of their time to developing an independent range of research.

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Leads and supervises a microsurgery core facility.
  • Functions as a microsurgeon performing heart, kidney and skin transplantation in mouse models, but additionally will assist in other immunology experiments using the transplanted animals.
  • Trains and supervises Research assistants, postdocs, and or students in microsurgery techniques as required.
  • Responsible for the scheduling of all microsurgery procedures by the microsurgery core, including those performed by the other microsurgeons, and will submit invoices for services rendered.
  • Collaborates with Dr. Heeger and his laboratory manager to order all equipment and reagents required to maintain the microsurgery core.
  • May develop new projects under Dr. Heeger's guidance, with a long-term goal of acquiring new funding.

 


Education:

  • PhD or highest degree in their field, required.
  • Demonstrated significant, original, and creative contributions to a research program.

Experience and Skills:

  • Completion of postdoctoral appointment in area of specialization, as applicable.
  • Knowledge of PI’s area of research specialization.
  • Demonstrated technical competency in a variety of research techniques and protocols.

Physical Demands:

Able to perform moderate lifting. Able to sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Able to read scientific papers and online documents. Able to operate standard office equipment. Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job duties.
