Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to serve the scientific and laboratory equipment maintenance and repair needs of Biology Department as well as to coordinate with facilities staff to maintain proper working order of the research facilities.

Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Working knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and other devices.
• Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, charts and designs.
• Ability to work from ideas and to draw own sketches and designs.
• Ability to make varied mathematical computations involved in designing and constructing apparatus and equipment.
• Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment.
• Ability to design, trouble-shoot and maintain complex equipment.
• Ability to operate standard tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications
Five years of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing scientific instruments and equipment
Experience working in academic research laboratories and/or biomedical repair
Knowledge of State of Texas and/or UNT policies and procedures
Relevant degree or certification from a technical college/institution
EPA 608u certification and knowledge of refrigeration systems

Job Duties
o
Troubleshoot problems and perform repairs on a wide range of different scientific instrumentation and equipment including ultralow refrigeration systems, common refrigeration systems, microscopes, power supplies, UHV systems, thermocyclers, mass specs, NMRs, etc. Work with suppliers to obtain any parts and technical support needed to complete repairs.
o
Develop and follow preventative maintenance plans for department-owned research and instructional scientific instrumentation. Perform preventative maintenance according to the plans.
o
Coordinate with vendors and instrument custodians/operators to plan and carry out installation of new equipment for research and instructional labs.
o
Assist researchers with proper maintenance and usage of scientific instruments and equipment.
o
Assist with annual inventory of capital assets/equipment in the Biology Department. Update inventory throughout the year and transfer unneeded equipment to university surplus.
o
Process departmental key and swipe card requests. Coordinate lock changes and maintenance.
o
Report building maintenance problems and work with Facilities to accomplish repairs.
o
As needed, assist with after-hours needs of research facilities and greenhouses
o
As needed, use a university P-card for instrument-related purchases. Keep current with P-card training and reconcile the P-card as required.
