The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in molecular biology, immunology, or protein biochemistry?
  • Contribute to the Immune Resilience Future Science Platform
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This position will form part of the Immune Resilience Future Science Platform (FSP). The Immune Resilience FSP aims to harness the fundamental understanding of the immune system to develop novel strategies and platforms that will build resilience in animals to combat disease and parasite challenges.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic researcher to work on a new project to characterise the interactomes of critical immunomodulatory molecules in the context of inflammation and infection with viruses. This exciting study has the potential to inform future drug discovery programs and uncover novel biology underpinning critical immune and inflammatory responses, relevant to a wide range of diseases and infections.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Conducting research in immunology/cell biology and proteomics, including (but not limited to):
    • Immunoassays (e.g., ELISA, flow cytometry, immunoblotting).
    • Molecular biology, including developing CRISPR assays to generate novel cell lines for interactome studies.
    • Mass spectrometry and other proteomics, including sample preparation, running assays and analysis of data.
    • Work collaboratively and respectfully with colleagues across different teams and Business Units, including Health and Biosecurity.
    • Analyse data, prepare reports, meeting abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Attending scientific meetings and present research data to peers, both internally and externally.
  • Assisting with supervision of students, including interns and undergraduate placements.
  • Assisting in identifying, planning and preparing research proposals.

Location: Melbourne, VIC

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

Reference: 88222

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, or similar. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Expertise in molecular biology and experience with generating and validating new cell lines using CRISPR technologies.
  • Experience with cell culture, particularly pertinent to immunology studies.
  • Experience with one or more immunological assay (e.g., ELISA, flow cytometry, immunoblotting).
