Position Summary

The role of this position is to provide leadership and support for the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) of Diagnostic Imaging.

Emphasis is placed on managing the processes and decisions that affect the clinical delivery of care, by directly supporting the Radiology Staff to include but not limited to Radiologists, Radiology Technologists, Radiology Support Staff, Radiology Nurses, and any City of Hope Clinicians on campus and off campus. 

In collaboration with IT colleagues, troubleshoot system and user problems. Communicate with the system vendors and end users in order to resolve problems. Work with Staff members for system training and updates on system issues.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Monitors performance of the Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS), initiating corrective action when appropriate to maintain PACS database and EPIC Radiant functionality (RIS)
  • Act as point of contact for all upgrades and installs. The PACS / RIS Administrator serves as the key communicator regarding the consistent value associated with digital image distribution Interfaces with PACS vendors, modality vendors, and COH staff regarding PACS / RIS  issues
  • Participates in division planning and implementation to meet division and organizational strategic objectives relating to PACS / RIS  system components. Identifies the need for system enhancements and maintenance in time for appropriate budget planning
  • Assist and provide recommendations in the development of policies and procedures to: support PACS / RIS operation and use; support patient care; and support compliance with regulatory bodies
  • Respond to system and user issues as they arise in collaboration with IT colleagues.
  • Address system and user problems. Address report quality issues, including addendums. Interact with vendor to try and resolve recognition issues experienced by Providers. 
  • Provides direction and leadership and serves as a resource to staff on all PACS / RIS related projects. Meets regularly to review project activities, staff performance and management strategies. 
  • Participate in developing short and long-range plans; advise customer and management regarding system software and hardware enhancements, integration and networking, etc
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems, including the resolution of technical problems as needed, on an ongoing basis as they relate to the execution of PACS / RIS objectives
  • Assists in the development of technical policies and procedures for PACS/RIS, to include system description and overview, operating characteristics, security and password procedures and user profiles.
  • Issue Management.  Track and manage all system issues.  Diagnostic monitor deployment, calibration, and maintenance to follow company QA/QC policies.  Configuration and troubleshooting of document and image importing applications.  HL7 and DICOM interface monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Maintains professional growth and development and stays current on the latest trends in area of expertise through participation in educational programs, review of current literature, and attending meetings and workshops
  • Determines training necessary for staff to maintain and enhance professional growth, development. and job knowledge.  Facilitates arrangements for attendance
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

Minimum Education:

  • Required minimum Bachelor’s Degree in related healthcare discipline or information systems or minimum 5 years PACS / RIS support experience

Minimum Experiences:

  • Five or more years healthcare experience in a dynamic, fast paced, environment implementing complex healthcare projects
  • Solid understanding of PACS (Picture Archive and Communication System) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS)
  • Ability to effectively communicate across all staff/management levels both written and verbally
  • Ability to manage 3rd party resources – including vendors and consultants

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Five or more years healthcare IT or Informatics project experience with PACS and RIS systems.
