Supervisor, Pathology Assistants – Pathology Anatomy Program Administration

Based in the Pathology Anatomy Program Administration Department, the Pathologist Assistant Supervisor is responsible for supervising grossing room personnel (Pathologist Assistants and Lab Assistants) and the day-to-day workflows in a very busy gross room operation.

Position Highlights:

  • Assists in the preparation and performance of routine surgical specimen dissection, intraoperative frozen sections, touch imprints for cytological evaluation, autopsy cases, and evaluation of specimens for tissue core collection or research. 
  • Provides day-to-day oversight of staff and activities within the laboratory, to ensure that quality and regulatory requirements are met, and test results are reported within defined turnaround times.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains department operations of multiple sites in compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards, updating policies and processes to comply with new requirements as needed and verifying accuracy of reporting with the LIS/HIS.
  • Provides day-to-day oversight of staff and activities within the laboratory to ensure that quality and regulatory requirements are met, and test results are reported within defined turnaround times.
  • Works directly with internal and external departments to ensure quality and efficiency in patient testing, all processes, and research support services.
  • Participates in the hiring and training of new staff; monitors employee performance and evaluates personnel; counsels employees as appropriate when corrective action is needed.
  • Formulates annual operating and capital equipment budgets; monitors financial performance and volumes in order to provide variance explanations and take corrective actions to meet budget goals.

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences field; master's degree in Pathology or related preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in a clinical laboratory setting as a Pathologist Assistant, preferably in an academic oncology institution.
  • ASCP certification; this may be waived in lieu of over five (5) years' experience in an oncology hospital setting.  
  • Possess regulatory knowledge of state, federal, TJC and CAP.
  • Possess demonstrated organizational and effective communication skills and knowledge of laboratory LIS systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, troubleshoot and adapt quickly to changes.
