Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will have a passion for diversity and inclusion, solid experience working on a variety of diversity initiatives, understanding of industry DEI best practices, excellent training/adult learning experience, partnership capability, executive communication skills, analytical skills, and demonstrated ability to collaborate cross functionally and drive strategy in a fast-paced environment. Our ideal candidate is strategic and inventive, an excellent writer, as well as outstanding at tactical implementation and operational excellence. Collaboratively leads the design of the organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategy and training programs, to include local community and patient population. Formulates and implements plans, procedures, policies and programs to address organizational training implementation and issue resolution. Directs Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training/learning projects and programs to help build an internal organization that embraces and demonstrates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and represent City of Hope as a collaborative community partner. Manages training vendor partner relationship(s). Evaluates and assesses both community and organizational needs and gaps in collaboration with CCARES/COE, Health Equity and Community Benefit partners to support and drive growth and participation in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs and proactively creates tools and resources to support other departments. Regular contact with senior leadership and department heads. Manages, trains and develops staff by providing timely feedback, coaching and support. As needed, assists department management in supporting key projects.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Designs and conducts staff and management training on diversity and inclusion topics.
- In effort to further DEI strategy and build awareness of DEI mission, diagnose diversity, equity and inclusion related issues, recommend potential solutions and execute organizational interventions for relevant DEI training/learning development. Partner with other internal human resources departments in collaboration regarding content, timing, tracking completion and leadership accountability. Partner closely with stakeholders across HR, Health Equities, Beckman Research, Graduate School and GME program to develop, design, implement and improve diversity, equity and inclusion training/learning devPlans, coordinates and assists with scheduling training, facilitation and other Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives as appropriate. Primary point of contact regarding diversity, equity & inclusion training with external vendor(s).
- Collaboratively develop the design of the diversity, equity and inclusion strategy regarding university recruitment, fellowships and internships. Plan and direct the implementation of action plans in collaboration with key stakeholders across the organization.
- Providing coaching, education and consultation to HR and business leaders to develop goals and practices that positively impact diversity and inclusion outcomes
- Consults with top management, department heads, GME, Health Equities and graduate school faculty on current and emerging employee Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training, topics and programs and how they may support organizational growth. Assist with writing DEI narratives for grants and proposals.
- Identify and leverage best demonstrated practices for relationship building, mentorship, communication strategy and long-term pipelining with HBCU’s and MSIs (minority serving institutions).
- Responsible for oversight of DE&I governance, mentoring, coaching, training and development initiatives and support City of Hope’s short and long-term DEI strategies.
- Collaborate with Graduate School Faculty and Beckman Research Institute researchers to develop engaging programming that will provide a unique opportunity for students to see and engage with City of Hope staff members, City of Hope research and City of Hope course work. Also work with faculty on research and grant opportunities that could showcase City of Hope’s academic research internally and externally.
- Able to write/document DEI progress tailored to audience – i.e. grant proposals, internal communication updates, training proposals, training scenarios, etc.
- Deliver on performance expectations and goals aligned with organization objectives. Incorporating practices and processes that embed diversity, equity and inclusion into all aspects of the employee life cycle (recruitment, selection, performance management, development, mobility, retention and engagement)
- Contributes to organizational initiatives by serving on internal and external committees as appropriate.
- Manages resources and budget levels to meet strategic objectives and operational needs. Makes, recommends and/or approve vendor proposals, contracts, etc.
- Engage with leadership across the business to drive diversity, equity and inclusion related messages throughout the organization. Partnering with our Internal Communications team to influence and drive the diversity, equity and inclusion narrative and communications regarding training learning objectives and their alignment to DEI mission and strategy
- Leads efforts to update HR and organizational policies and procedures to incorporate most current DEI language. Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in organizational development, behavioral sciences, human resources, diversity & inclusion, business management or education.
- Must have at least 5 years of experience in a Diversity and Inclusion or related position, preferably in a healthcare or research environment.
- Must have at least 3 years of experience in a management/leadership role.
- Must have Proficient project management skills.
- Experience developing and delivering training materials using adult learning theory
- Excellent vendor management capabilities
- Deep passion for the DEI space and working relationships with external agencies or community groups across the U.S.
- Proven experience in disruptive DEI models, strategies, and communications
- Proven track record of problem solving as an owner, taking on entrepreneurial challenges and simplifying the complex
- Excellent communications skills, including up-front platform skills
- Strong Project Management skillset; ability to demonstrate strong influencing and stakeholder development skills
- Human Resources Development, Strategy Development, Organization Development or Industrial and/or Organizational Psychology
- Excellent organizational skills
- Analysis and critical thinking skills
