Job Description

At Argonne National Laboratory, we work in support of the US Department of Energy’s missions to ensure America’s security and prosperity by pursuing its energy, environmental, and economic opportunities and addressing challenges through transformative science and technology (S&T) solutions. The Advanced Energy Technologies (AET) directorate at Argonne, one of five S&T directorates, seeks to enable a sustainable, secure, equitable, and prosperous energy future for the U.S. AET comprises 3 Divisions and several cross-cutting initiatives that are focused on solving the most pressing energy, mobility, materials, and manufacturing challenges using the laboratory’s world-class scientific and engineering expertise and facilities. The AET team collaborates with internal and external partners on cutting-edge research, development, demonstration, and deployment of clean energy technologies. Our current research portfolio has grown through work done for key sponsors such as the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office, the Office of Electricity, the Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Office of the Department of Energy and includes a focus on the newly created Offices under the DOE Undersecretary of Infrastructure such as the Office of Clean Energy Demonstration and the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains, as well as other federal agencies and non-federal entities.

The Division Director for Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS DD) reports to the AET Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) and works closely with the AET Leadership Team (LT) to manage S&T and operational functions of the Division in alignment with the Directorate and Lab strategic plan(s), to maintain existing programs, to develop new initiatives, and to sustain/grow relationships with sponsors.

TAPS’s vision is to be a global leader in transportation and power systems research from on-road to non-road vehicles to facilitate the transition to a decarbonized economy by developing sustainable transportation and power solutions. TAPS’s mission is to conduct systematic and deep analyses of all sustainable mobility technologies for on-road vehicles (light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty), and recently added non-road construction, agriculture, mining, rail, marine, and aviation sectors.  Decarbonizing stationary power generation, including combined heat and power systems, is also an emerging research area for the division.  TAPS leverages its groundbreaking experimental and analytical capabilities to accelerate the development of sustainable mobility and power technologies to achieve the aggressive U.S. decarbonization goals. Our expertise and capabilities provide workforce development, demonstration and deployment of innovative solutions for decarbonization that will support our nation’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation and power generation future that benefits everyone.

The TAPS DD will lead, manage, and motivate a high performing, vibrant, and diverse multi-disciplinary scientific and technical professional team of over one hundred employees with an annual research budget of nearly $50 million.  The DD role includes line management responsibility for research, development, and operations of the division. The Director will lead the development and implementation of near- and long-term strategic priorities of the division and be proactive in identifying and pursuing new R&D opportunities. As a member of the AET directorate leadership team and the lab’s extended leadership team, the TAPS DD is a strategic partner in stewarding the organization’s interests, aligning division strategic goals to the directorate’s and the Laboratory’s strategic goals. The TAPS DD fosters and develops inter-divisional, inter-directorate, and multi-disciplinary research initiatives and collaborations across the Laboratory. The DD will engage constructively with other Argonne leadership teams, DOE, and other federal and non-federal sponsors in the planning, coordination, integration, management, execution, and enhancement of research, development, and assessment activities, including the support of clean energy demonstrations and deployments.

The TAPS DD assures that all Divisional activities will be executed in compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and security responsibilities established by the Laboratory's ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security policies, work rules, and safe practices. The DD will promote and execute Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork, and support the laboratory‘s goals for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the workplace.
