Job Description

The Decision and Infrastructure Science (DIS) Division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most challenging security, risk, and resilience problems. DIS experts have developed methods to understand dependencies and interdependencies, build resilient infrastructure, and respond to emergencies. DIS recently established a new, cross-disciplinary National Economic Research and Resilience Center (NERRC), which provides innovative and transparent economic data access, research, and analysis to support and strengthen economic development and resilience in communities across the nation.

DIS is seeking an experienced economic development researcher or practitioner who will serve as NERRC’s principal economic development subject matter expert.

As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, enabling complex technical problems to be explored through the integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.

In this position, you will:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary research projects related to economic development, resilience, innovation, entrepreneurship, and other related topics.

  • Provide senior federal economic development leaders with expert advice and subject matter expertise.

  • As needed, provide economic development subject matter expertise for NERRC and DIS disaster recovery and resilience projects.

  • Manage NERRC’s economic resilience applied research network, including developing and publishing regular research reports, facilitating webinars, and hosting other partnership events.

  • Build and strengthen partnerships with federal agencies, non-profits, academia, and other private sector organizations, including leading collaborative research and development initiatives.

  • Coordinate NERRC’s annual conference, including but not limited to facilitating and coordinating the development of the agenda, recruiting speakers, and coordinating logistics with Argonne’s events team.

Position Requirements

To be considered you must have:

  • 10+ years of experience in economic development, public policy, social science research, and/or program management, with increasing leadership responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial economic development programs, policies, and best practices.

  • Superior subject matter expertise related to economic development, economic resilience, entrepreneurship, innovation, workforce development, or other related topics.

  • Excellent leadership and people skills, including experience managing large and diverse teams.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. This includes the ability to clearly articulate complex information in a way that is accessible to broad audiences, as well as the capability to interact with team members and sponsors on all aspects of sponsored research activities.

  • Experience with project financial management.

  • A master’s degree in urban and regional planning, economics, public policy/administration, operations research, or other related field is preferred.

  • All candidates must pass a general background check and drug screening for employment and may be required to obtain a “L” clearance.
