Job Description
Summary
Under minimal supervision, provides skilled care and handling of gnotobiotic laboratory animals. Primarily working in germ-free areas that includes standard housing, biohazard, non-human primate, and specialized animal colonies. Also be responsible for limited supervisory duties that includes direction and oversight of work but excluding discipline.
Job Duties
- Conducts daily health checks and feeds and waters animals under gnotobiotic conditions.
- Enters sterile supplies into animal housing areas using specialized equipment and aerosolized sterilants.
- Changes cages as scheduled and sanitizes housing areas.
- Performs technical procedures that includes blood collection, administration of test articles and medication, permanent animal identification and animal restraint.
- Assists with surgeries and pre- and post-surgical care of animals.
- Maintains accurate colony records and study records.
- Records study-related data and communicates to stakeholders.
- Implements study plans and coordinates with other staff to achieve scientific objectives.
- Participates in technical services offered by department.
- Provides training and mentorship to fewer senior technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data collection.
- Previous research and/or animal care and handling experience is desirable.
