Dr. Michael E. Chernew, the Leonard D. Schaeffer Professor of Health Care Policy and Director of the Healthcare Markets and Regulation Lab (HMR Lab), seeks a full-time Research Assistant (RA) to perform a wide range of research related activities. The Research Assistant will contribute to research projects in health care economics and health care policy. Research areas may include but are not limited to payment reform, health care spending, consumer and patient engagement, quality measurement, value-based payment, delivery system transformation, health insurance exchanges, and risk adjustment. The selected candidate will work as part of a team in reviewing literature, collect, organize and analyze data, support drafting and possibly co-authoring papers, creating presentation/ dissemination materials, summarize and communicate information, draft reports, manuscript text or other documents for publication or presentation, prepare PowerPoint slides, assist in the development of grant proposals, data use applications, and IRB protocols. These tasks may be performed independently and unsupervised. The candidate will be expected to have programming and data management skills as well as strong communication skills in both written and verbal formats. This position is ideal for candidates seeking to conduct research in preparation for an advanced degree in health economics or health policy. Prior research experience, along with demonstrated knowledge of research areas, research methods and experience with statistical analysis techniques is desired. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated to succeed with limited supervision and direction.
Basic Qualifications
- Two or more years of related research experience. Higher education may count towards experience.
- Applicant should have proficiency in using statistical software packages such as STATA.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- High-level understanding of health policy and health care systems in the U.S.
- Experience with statistical programming using at least one of the following, a plus: STATA, SAS, Phython, R. preferably in health policy, economics, or health industry related field.
- Related work experience is desired.
- Responsibilities will require knowledge of health care delivery systems and the relevant research populations; an understanding of statistics, statistical programs, and research methods, as well as data management.
- Responsibilities will require strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work well within a group or independently; organization and attention to detail; demonstrating initiative and resourcefulness to complete tasks without a high level of direction; independent judgment, patience, and ability to maintain a calm and cooperative attitude during periods of increased activity.
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
