Position Description
The Digital Projects Assistant will provide technical support and software expertise for the digital initiatives, web services, and online tools managed by Countway Library’s Publishing & Data Services unit. Reporting to the Associate Director of Scholarly Communication & Open Science, the Digital Projects Assistant will be an active member of the Publishing & Data Services team, and provide front-line support of the Countway Library’s digital scholarship technologies, including applications we deliver to students, faculty and staff at Harvard Medical School, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Longwood community. In collaboration with Countway’s Digital Scholarship Librarian, Digital Initiatives/Accessibility Librarian, and Research Data Services Librarian, the incumbent will participate in projects that support our team’s goals and services, including Harvard Library-specific applications and computing, digital learning within our Makerspace, and assisting with editing/developing Countway’s web services. The Digital Projects Assistant will have a natural desire to experiment with new technologies, experiment with open source software, and find innovative opportunities to enhance Countway’s digital library services.
 
  • Provide support for locally installed library-specific software accessible from Countway’s public-facing library workstations and web pages.
  • Facilitate consultations and support for 3D printing service and related software/hardware within the Countway Library Makerspace.
  • Investigate / Document / Install / Configure “library-specific” software (and related hardware) that directly supports the library’s digital initiatives as coordinated by the Publishing & Data Services unit.
  • Explore, plan and integrate connections between the Countway library webpage and Harvard’s multifaceted digital repositories and search/discovery systems.
  • Liaise with Harvard Library ITS unit to ensure electronic databases, customizations, UX, and API opportunities are being fully utilized with HMS/HSPH/HSDM users in mind.
  • Provide training and online tutorials for patron-facing applications and Countway’s digital services
  • Monitor emerging web-based technologies/industry trends and consider their application towards advancing user experiences and information-seeking behavior
Basic Qualifications
College background in computer programming, information technology, web design/admin, and customer service and 4-5+ years of experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. Experience managing web technologies and CMS administration (i.e. Drupal Admin)
  • Strong familiarity with web design methods and integrating external widgets & APIs
  • Understanding of Virtual Reality technologies and their application in education settings
  • Ability to effectively communicate IT complexities in a concise and lucid manner
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting computer software/hardware configurations
  • Knowledge of data extraction, cleansing, and visualization applications. (Google Data Studio; Tableau)
  • Maintains excellent writing and language skills
  • Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical & organizational abilities
  • Experience supporting/designing for library environments and/or higher education preferred
  • Working knowledge of javascript, python, R, CSS, HTML, and/or dynamic web scripting techniques

This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
