Position Description
The Harvard Medical School (HMS) IT Research Computing group is a critical part of the HMS research mission and comprises a diverse team of individuals who collaborate with researchers on their computational needs, advise them on solutions, and implement new ones as needed. The Research Data Management (RDM) team is part of the Research Computing group and assists researchers to better manage, organize, and share data throughout the research lifecycle.

The RDM Support Specialist will be a member of the RDM team (Research Data Manager and RDM Analyst) providing initial and primary support to researchers’ storage requests and research data management inquiries (submitted via support tickets, emails, etc.). The RDM Support Specialist will gather information and requirements from researchers and assist the RDM Team with handling such requests.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and triage incoming data management support tickets, including requests from Principal Investigators (PIs) and researchers for HMS data storage and research data management inquiries.
  • Respond to researcher requests about policies, and available resources, and recommended best research data management practices, customized as needed.
  • Guide researchers with setting up, accessing, and moving data to other storage environments (i.e., data transfer requests between HMS storage offerings).
  • Train and assist researchers to use self-service storage usage monitoring tools.
  • Collaborate with the RDM Team (Research Data Manager and RDM Analyst) on inquiries and requests that require additional assistance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of technical support and/or help desk experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Technical expertise in IT storage and/or data management systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong dedication to customer service
  • Experience with the research data lifecycle and data management concepts.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management (ITSM).
  • Ability to work with people of all levels of technical or scientific ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptability and ability to prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and efficiently with team members, other IT groups, and members of the research community.
  • Subject matter expertise in biological or biomedical sciences.
Additional Information
This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
