Position description

The Department of Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego invites applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor position specializing in biological computation, broadly defined and have made original research contributions in their area. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, innovative mathematical and computational approaches to large-scale neural and behavioral data, biologically inspired machine learning (ML) and/or artificial intelligence (AI) and ML/AI-informed studies of neurobiology, spiking neural networks, neuromorphic computation, and biologically inspired models of behavior (including natural language processing). The successful candidate will be expected to lead an independent research program and supervise trainees in cognitive science at all levels, including undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego boasts a broadly interdisciplinary faculty that has experienced substantial, rapid growth in recent years. The department places a strong emphasis on teaching and undergraduate education.

Cognitive Science faculty have research interests in a diverse set of phenomena, including affect, cognitive development, creativity, decision making, individual differences, executive function, gesture, language, learning and memory, math, music perception, vision, reasoning, and social interaction. We often combine multiple methodological and theoretical approaches, including behavioral neuroscience, comparative cognition, computational epigenomics, computational neuroscience, control theory, data science, electrophysiology, experimental psychology, eye tracking, field work, genomics, image processing, linguistic methodologies, machine learning, neuroimaging, and psychophysics.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
At the time of application, candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or be ABD (all but dissertation) in their area of Biological Computation or a closely related field. Contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
