Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) is a U.S. Department of Energy-funded Bioenergy Research Center, led by the University of Wisconsin-Madison with Michigan State University as its principal partner. The GLBRC has been a leader in biofuel research, developing sustainable biofuels and bioproducts that are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. The GLBRC leverages its success on an outstanding combination of expertise and resources available across its member institutions.
The GLBRC Metabolomics Lab is one of the Center's Core Facilities and provides high throughput analytical services to identify and quantify monosaccharides, metabolites, and inhibitors found in plant and microbial extracts. The successful candidate will work as part of the team to prepare standards and process samples from researchers; keep accurate records of all experiments, results, and other laboratory records; generate data and compile and summarize results, and communicate concerns, expectations, turnaround times, etc. to supervisor and researchers; and maintain and operate analytical instruments (technical skills training and in operations of instruments will be provided). The candidate is also expected to keep their knowledge and skills current and assist in optimizing and developing protocols to accommodate the evolving metabolomics needs of the Center.
Main Duties
- Perform established high-throughput assays following standard procedures
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain analytical instruments e.g., HPLC, GC-MS (training will be provided)
- Assist with method development to accommodate requests from researchers
- Keep accurate and detailed laboratory records, perform experiments, generate data, and compile and summarize results, and provide reports/updates and to the laboratory supervisor and researchers via the Center's Data Catalog and LIMS (Laboratory Information management Systems)
- Assist with all other general laboratory needs, including preparing stock solutions and instrument standards
- Assist in managing projects and communicate user expectations, turnaround times, concerns, updates, etc. relevant to projects submitted to the facility
- Occasional weekend availability may be needed based on demand

RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducts research experiments with limited supervision. Provides technical support with some degree of independence for research projects and/or labs under moderate supervision.
50% Prepares lab and/or field test materials and samples according to established research requirements and specifications. Performs lab or field tests.
5% Inspects and maintains equipment, supplies, inventory, and facility spaces
30% Collects data and monitors test results according to established research requirements and specifications
10% Reviews data to summarize results for presentations or reporting
5% Performs miscellaneous lab work to help achieve the Center's research goals

EDUCATION:
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Bachelor's degree is preferred but relevant work experience can satisfy this requirement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate studies in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences, or related field
- Analytical chemistry lab and/or research experience
- Experience using relevant analytical software, interpreting data, and generating reports
- Experience developing and generating protocols, reports, and other required documentation for data management (e.g., laboratory information management system)
- Successful candidates will have some experience in instrumental analysis
- Demonstrates clear record keeping skills, attention to detail, and data traceability
- Demonstrates superior oral and written communication skills
- Must be self-motivated, dependable, have a good work ethic, and able to work independently and as part of a team
WORK SCHEDULE:
Occasional weekend availability may be required based on demand.
