Job Description

Basic Purpose:

Provide technical expertise to Division programs related to national security and nonproliferation of chemical weapons-related technologies, in addition to other aspects of chemical security and arms control. Provide project management and implementation support for selected projects, including engagement with stakeholders. Prepare and deliver training and lectures on nonproliferation subjects. Prepare and contribute to technical analyses and reports of proliferation activities; proliferation potential of international transfers of certain materials, equipment, and technologies; and proliferation and security implications of emerging and converging chemical technologies. Potential opportunity to perform mix of laboratory and office work.

Position Requirements

To be considered you must have:

  • Background in chemistry or chemical engineering with strong knowledge of a breadth of chemistry topics.

  • Knowledge of technical aspects of proliferation and nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, particularly chemical weapons.

  • Familiarity with U.S. and international export control policies and regimes and their relationship to proliferation-sensitive technologies.

  • Independent judgment, strong organizational skills, and excellent skills in oral and written communications.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical topics to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Skills on PC systems using word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and other typical office software applications.

  • Organizational skills.

  • Familiarity working in international and multicultural environments and knowledge of diplomatic and communications protocols.

Preferred Knowledge in one or more of the following:

  • Types of chemical weapons and production methods.

  • Chemistry associated with conventional and high explosives and detecting or quantifying explosives.

  • Compositional analysis and trace element forensic inspection of materials or samples.

  • Domestic or international regulations associated with holding or transporting chemical weapons or other dangerous chemicals.

  • Detecting, characterizing, and verifying the presence of a range of types of chemicals using both non-destructive (hands-off) detection and sampling.

Other:

  • Must have a solid technical background in a relevant field and a strong desire to apply that background to nonproliferation policy support.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) depending upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • Assistant Chemist, RD1, Level: Bachelor’s and 0+ years; Master’s and 0+ years.

  • Chemist, RD2, Level: Bachelor’s and 5+ years; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 0+ years, or equivalent.
