Job Description

We invite you apply for a Software Quality Engineer role with our Quality Assurance Services organization. In this role, under the guidance of the Quality Assurance manager, you will plan, implement, and maintain an effective lab-wide Software quality assurance (QA) program for safety software and other software requiring a higher level of quality. This individual will be responsible for defining, implementing, and supporting best-practice QA strategies and activities for all phases of the software lifecycle for purchased software, custom-configured software, or in-house developed software (created by in-house professional software developers, scientific researchers or operational staff). This will include support in the areas of (1) Software QA program development and (2) aiding, mentoring, and training laboratory personnel in program implementation. This may include the following activities:

  • Review system and software design, change specifications, and plans against project or process requirements.
  • Develop, review, modify, and execute software test plans
  • Analyze and write test standards and procedures
  • Conduct and document tests to verify and validate functionality and implementation of risk controls and identify defects
  • Review and analyze test results to determine whether functionality and risk controls are verified and validated

 This role will receive training from resources including a colleague retiring August 2023. We expect you to have the following within 6 months of hire:

  • Certification as an ASQ Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE)
  • Working knowledge of Department of Energy/ Argonne Quality Assurance policies and requirements regarding safety software QA
  • Working knowledge of 10 CFR 830 regulation (Sub parts A & B), Department of Energy Order (DOE O) 414.1, and Argonne prime contract as applicable to software.
  • Familiarity with the Department of Energy Safety Software Central Registry
  • Knowledge of other applicable (or potentially applicable) software quality assurance and cybersecurity consensus standards and guidance such as ASME NQA-1 2008, DOE G 414.1-4, DOE 200.1, IEEE 730.1, IEEE 830, IEEE 1228, IEEE 1219, IEEE 828, ISO/IEC 12207  

Position Requirements

  • Experience with software and application development.
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles and skills and tools and ability to contribute to software quality assurance throughout the software product development lifecycle including requirements development, software/application supplier assessment, requisition reviews, design and implementation, safety analysis architecture reviews, systems engineering,  verification and validation test planning ,testing, and review, receipt inspection, operations & maintenance, configuration management, and documentation.
  • Experience incorporating software quality assurance activities in both waterfall and Agile software development methodologies.
  • Skill to listen to and work with customers such software owners, users, and software developers, such that support is seen as a value add versus a compliance requirement.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including project planning, scheduling, cost-benefit analysis, change management.
  • Skill in oral and written communication to audiences from leadership to individual contributors.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and be a contributing member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Skill in developing and delivering training
