Summary

Dr. Hoda Badr in the Section of Epidemiology and Population Sciences in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (https://www.bcm.edu/research/labs/hoda-badr) is seeking a competent and enthusiastic Qualitative Research Associate to work in her lab on extramurally funded research studies focusing on the behavioral and stress-related aspects of cancer treatment and survivorship. The research associate will play an integral role in observational research studies that involve conducting interviews and focus groups with adult cancer patients, family caregivers, and healthcare providers to guide interventions to improve outcomes and cancer care delivery for medically underserved patients and caregivers. The research associate will direct coding and analysis of qualitative data using Grounded Theory and Rapid Qualitative Analysis approaches. This includes the development of codebooks, training junior coders, conducting coder reliability analysis, leading meetings to resolve discrepant codes, and synthesizing coded data into research reports. This position also requires familiarity with survey processes and gathering insights from survey comments by translating survey comments into succinct, meaningful, and actionable conclusions. The ideal candidate for this position will have the ability to think critically and synthesize complex information into easy to understand insights. This role necessitates collaborating with multiple stakeholders and strong organizational skills including managing simultaneous priorities. Strong orientation to detail, flexibility in response to changing priorities, and ability to work independently are also key. Individuals who are bilingual in English and Spanish are strongly preferred.

 

A flexible work arrangement (with some days in office and 1 or 2 remote days) is possible.

Job Duties

  • Leads and conducts qualitative study research tasks (e.g., data collection, coding, and management)
  • Evaluates and analyzes qualitative data from focus groups and interviews
  • Summarizes findings in reports to principal investigator and assists with drafting manuscripts
  • Conducts literature searches
  • May supervise, schedule, and coordinate the activities of junior coding analysts
  • Occasional travel around Houston may be required for data collection 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.  Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, Medical Anthropology or a related field
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis, and/or survey technology tools (such as Qualtrics, SPSS, and/or ATLAS.ti, etc.)
  • Bilingual – English and Spanish
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Endnote
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills
  • Prior experience conducting research in clinical/medical settings
  • Experience writing scientific research reports and manuscripts
