City of Hope Medical Group seeks a Chief of the Division of Anatomic Pathology to join our growing team.

As part of our expanding anatomic pathology services and translational and clinical trial research, City of Hope National Medical Center is seeking an academic pathologist to serve as Chief of the Division of Anatomic Pathology in the Department of Pathology. This Division includes surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy pathology. We are recruiting a board-certified pathologist leader who is highly qualified with prior administrative experience and has subspecialist expertise in the field of anatomic pathology.

The faculty member we are recruiting will provide medical leadership for the entire Division of Anatomic Pathology with emphasis on Surgical Pathology Services, serving as a liaison and clinical consultant to City of Hope medical staff, individual healthcare providers, and clinical laboratory and administrative staff. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Department Chair, five other Division Chiefs (Hematopathology, Clinical Pathology, Pathology Informatics & Data Science, Molecular Pathology & Therapy Biomarkers, and Transfusion Medicine), CLIA Laboratory Director, Director of Clinical Laboratories, Department Administrator, and laboratory managers, supervisors, and technical staff on issues affecting anatomic pathology operations. The Division Chief will participate in the City of Hope southern California and national enterprise Clinical Network expansion team for support of clinical trials, including the strategic planning, management of growth, governance, budgeting, and marketing. The Chief will assist in further specialization of services, completing the conversion of the Division to digital pathology diagnosis, and enhancing augmented (artificial) intelligence research and clinical applications. The position provides an environment for continuous faculty and staff development and medical education, including the ACGME-accredited Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship, and develops and maintains professional relationships within and external to the institution.

Position Highlights:

Provides leadership for patient-centered care in collaboration with our diverse and nationally recognized team of physicians at City of Hope. This full-time anatomic pathology leadership position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Pathology for clinical, research, education and training, and administrative activities.

  • Clinical responsibilities include directing diagnostic services in the enterprise surgical pathology laboratories to support cancer patient care, and participating in quality control/quality assurance for Division activities in multiple clinical laboratory locations
  • The successful candidate will:
    • Join a multidisciplinary team of physicians and scientists in the Medical Group
    • Develop and support translational and clinical trial research in anatomic pathology
    • Participate in training and education of our ACGME and non-ACGME fellows
    • Assume responsibility for all phases of technical leadership, training, quality management, budgeting, and regulatory compliance associated with both laboratory-developed testing and in vitro diagnostics in anatomic pathology
    • The individual may also serve as the CLIA Laboratory Director for one or more of our regional Clinical Network laboratories, with occasional travel in southern California

Salary Range: $310K - $480K - The range listed is exclusively for base compensation for full-time employment and does not include incentive compensation or benefits. Actual compensation will be adjusted for experience, training, hospital/community need and other factors.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education / Work Experience

    • MD or equivalent
    • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology (American Board of Pathology or equivalent) Board certification in Clinical Pathology and/or a specialty area of pathology, and/or fellowship training preferred
    • Minimum of ten (10) years of anatomic pathology practice and research experience in progressive management positions
    • The selected candidate for the position must be eligible to obtain or already hold an active California medical license.

Minimum Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

    • Demonstrated knowledge about all phases of leadership, training, quality assurance/quality control, and regulatory compliance associated with anatomic pathology
    • Experience with research methodologies and grant funding
    • Experience in providing multisite anatomic pathology laboratory services and digital pathology
    • Interactions with diverse patient populations and workforces
    • Collegiality in collaboration with personnel at all levels of the organization
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and negotiate with people at all levels and skillsets
    • Direction of a complete business unit
    • Prioritization in allocating resources
    • Defining organizational goals, critical issues, and strategic plans
    • Modeling and upholding organizational norms and values including personnel health and safety
