As a Veterinarian Technician Assistant you will monitor and care for the health and well-being of animals housed in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU). Other duties include:

-Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, and examination and operating rooms.

-Restrain animals during examination and laboratory procedures.

-Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.

-Monitor and care for animals after surgery.

-Help provide emergency first aid to sick and injured animals.

-Give medication or immunizations that veterinarians prescribe.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitors condition of postoperative animals and implements animal health monitoring plan under the direction of the veterinary staff.
  • Administers medical treatments to animals as needed.
  • Assists investigators by performing special techniques or procedures.
  • Assists the veterinary staff with administration of the sentinel health monitoring program.
  • Ensures that areas used for technical procedures are well maintained and adequately supplied.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Certifications:

  • None required

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • At least one year of experience with demonstrated competence working with laboratory animals preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds
  • Significant amount of standing, bending, and walking.
  • Must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors and sights, as well as animal bites and scratches.
  • Must have the ability to complete the job before leaving work.
  • Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job.
  • All tasks must be performed to fulfill guidelines according to regulations.
  • Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.
  • May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
