Job Description

The CELS Systems Group's primary mission is to operate a computing environment that facilitates the research that is being carried out within the divisions of the Computing, Environment, and Life Sciences directorate. We design, build, and maintain the computing environment, tackle problems, and work with the user community. The CELS Systems group also researches the advancement and optimization of Systems Administration, and develops tools to that end.

As a member of CELS Systems, participates in the technical operation and support of the CELS directorate computing infrastructure and high performance computing (HPC) facilities in order to enhance the productivity of the scientific staff, administrative staff, and research colleagues. With technical staff and colleagues at other labs and universities, assists with the coordination of similar systems. Special emphasis of this position is on maintaining and developing the networking infrastructure within CELS.

Specific functions include:

  • Assist Sr. Network Engineer in planning, designing, implementing, enhancing, and maintaining the networking infrastructure provided by CELS, including the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility.
  • Coordinate with the CELS HPC teams, ALCF Networking and Operations teams, and other stakeholders in investigating reported issues to determine root-cause and solutions to problems.
  • Participate in the strategic and design tasks associated with the teams to provide new and enhanced services to the user community.

Position Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of computer networking hardware and software installation and maintenance.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in more than one of the following: IPV4, IPV6, Ethernet, OSPF, BGP, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), SNMP, DHCP, network monitoring and management tools and the architecture of computer networks.
  • This requisite level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved through a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • A service-orientated outlook is important.
  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
  • PT3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience using Linux or other Unix-based operating systems.
  • Knowledge of common scripting languages such as python and shell.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment, under general supervision, in performing the normal day-to-day work.
