Job Description

Argonne’s Vehicle and Mobility Systems department (VMS, vms.taps.anl.gov) is looking for a data scientist to prepare and analyze large datasets collected from millions of miles of real-world driving. The data has a small sample time (.1s-1s), dozens of attributes (powertrain, radar, localization, etc.) and occasionally video feeds. Data come from different sources, resulting in heterogeneity between subsets.

The candidate will:

  • Develop/improve a standardized and reusable data pipeline to ingest, process and store the data.

  • Develop/reuse analytical tools to explore and perform analysis over the data.

  • Test, document, and package the tools.

  • Perform analytics to support research questions.

  • Develop statistical or ML/DL models from data and integrate them in larger models.

The data will support research on automated driving and transportation energy-efficiency, e.g., when do drivers turn automated driving systems (ADS)? How does ADS compare to human driving energy-wise? How much does temperature affect energy consumption? How do human drivers react to preceding vehicles?

The candidate will join a large multi-disciplinary team that researches technologies to decarbonize transportation and develops recognized simulation tools in support of that. The VMS team collaborates with partners across the lab, with industry and academia, and has access to world-class HPC and experimental facilities.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in data analytics, including data management, signal processing, analysis and visualization

  • Experience with large time-series datasets

  • Knowledge in statistical modeling

  • Experience in software development, incl. source control, documentation, testing, packaging.

  • Experience in developing complex Python libraries.

  • Experience with machine-learning/deep-learning: model selection, model optimization, model training and validation

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position.  The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • RD2 Level: Bachelor’s and 5+ years; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 2-4 years, or equivalent

  • RD3 Level: Bachelor’s and 8+ years; Master’s and 5+ years; or Doctorate and 4+ years; or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with geospatial data.

  • Experience with video processing and image recognition.

  • Experience with following tools/libraries: Tableau, HERE API, Google API, YOLO, Dask, etc
