Position Summary:
Facilities Services Division of Design and Construction (DDC) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer interested in providing engineering support for facility improvements at UAF. The DDC team has overall responsibility for the planning and development of all UAF infrastructure and facilities in order to meet the educational and research needs of our vibrant university and community. This position works with a diverse professional team and provides professional engineering activities for the maintenance, operations, design, and construction divisions of Facilities Services. DDC is looking for experienced analytical thinkers who can work independently in a fast paced environment. A hard worker who will take the initiative and use expertise to review, evaluate and exchange design ideas with design consultants and facilities services personnel. Work requires originality and judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques procedures, and criteria during project design and construction. As a facility engineer, the successful candidate will independently perform detailed designs, reviews, and inspections of mechanical systems on small to large projects and with varying degrees of complexity. The incumbent must be fully competent in all conventional aspects of HVAC, plumbing, building controls, and fire protection system engineering and in-field construction inspection.
Duties:
Provide the design, engineering principles, technical expertise, and best practices to maintenance services for the support of facilities at the Fairbanks and remote campus facilities. Lead and direct the updating and maintenance of UAF Design Standards in support of UA's mission, strategic goals, sustainability, and user needs.Review construction documents during design for conformance with adopted code, UAF Design Standards and good engineering practice. Provide construction inspection and review as needed throughout the life of a project.Analyze various building mechanical systems where required for facility modifications as the need may arise. Design solutions and develop a budgetary estimate for project execution that results in an acceptable first cost, reasonable requirements for maintenance over the life of the equipment, long-term reliable operation, and energy efficiency. Frequently called upon to perform code reviews, calculations, and/or equipment selection that may or may not be linked to any specific project. Technical engineering support for construction projects and maintenance shop efforts at the Fairbanks and remote campus facilities. Troubleshoot, research, and engineer/design facilities systems such as water and waste plumbing, fire sprinklers, laboratory gas and vacuum, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment and control systems, VFDs, hydronic pumps, heat exchangers, and specialty research and teaching equipment. Serve as a campus engineering resource and provide mechanical engineering support for emergencies, routine maintenance, and preventative maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited engineering program. Knowledge of computer systems and applications including Windows operating system(s), AutoCAD, spreadsheets, word processors, and scheduling software. Substantial knowledge of mechanical and plumbing codes and regulations is required as is knowledge of building heating, plumbing, refrigeration, and control systems within commercial, institutional, and educational buildings. Working experience and skills with project scheduling, estimating, and construction drawings and specifications are highly preferred. Professional licensure in mechanical engineering is preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Five years of work experience acquired in a mechanical engineering position, and/or a combination of graduate level education, engineering experience, and building mechanical system maintenance and operations experience. Experience in engineering mechanical building systems that serve buildings similar to those found at a university is highly preferred.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited engineering program. Professional registration in the State of Alaska as a Mechanical Engineer is preferred or qualified to obtain professional registration in Mechanical Engineering from the State of Alaska within the first 12-months of employment.
