Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. You could be the postdoctoral appointee the Component Science and Mechanics Department is seeking to work on research projects in the field of nonlinear structural dynamics. You will collaborate with a diverse and broad class of professionals including mechanical engineers, analysts, experimentalists, mathematicians and computer scientists to develop new methodologies and algorithms to analyze and understand the complex vibration response of large-scale, nonlinear engineering structures. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Use high performance computing platforms to solve high dimensional, nonlinear finite element models using implicit and explicit solvers. + Research advanced topics in nonlinear structural dynamics for both conservative and non-conservative dynamical systems. + Apply nonlinear normal mode theory to develop advanced numerical algorithms that predict nonlinear solutions using techniques such as path-following, multi-harmonic balance, and/or shooting methods. + Investigate ways to integrate numerical methods into finite element software by partnering with code development teams. + Work closely with the Experimental Structural Dynamics Department to develop new test methodologies to measure nonlinear modal responses. + Present novel developments both internally and externally at various meetings, seminars and conferences. + Ph.D. conferred within the last 5 years in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics or other related fields of science and engineering. + Strong background in nonlinear structural dynamics and vibrations, including numerical methods, finite element analysis, and modal analysis. + Experience with nonlinear normal mode theory and demonstrated use to characterize and understand behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems + Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
+ Experience with development and implementation of numerical methods to solve nonlinear dynamical systems. + Excellent computer programming and code development skills. + Knowledge of experimental techniques for vibration testing and modal analysis. + Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills + Ability to work independently and to integrate effectively into a dynamic and diverse multidisciplinary team
The Component Science and Mechanics Department conducts frontier mechanics research and science-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment. Focus areas for the department include interfacial and micro/nano-mechanics, probabilistic mechanics and uncertainty quantification, and mechanical aspects of component and subsystem reliability. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, micro-structural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, micro-scale diagnostics, and adaptive structures. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and non-linear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment.
