Postdoctoral Appointee Three-Dimensional Materials Characterization
Job posting number: #7061717 (Ref:669671)
Posted: October 25, 2019
Job DescriptionAre you passionate about research related to materials characterization? If so, you may want to consider applying to join Sandia’s Materials Mechanics &Tribology department as a Postdoctoral Appointee. In this role, you will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Labs to tackle unusual research problems related to three-dimensional materials characterization. Our team has an immediate opportunity for a postdoctoral appointee focused on three-dimensional materials characterization. Job responsibilities include customizing, operating, and analyzing data output from an automated serial-sectioning system, and crafting and applying various imaging and data processing techniques to produce three-dimensional reconstructions and quantifications of features of interest. Postdoctoral appointee will also combine materials processing knowledge to provide recommendations for additional or complementary testing to provide improved understanding of material structure-to-property relations. Research materials include but are not limited to metals, ceramics, composites and multi-material components. Two secondary emphasis areas for the post-doctoral appointment will be to streamline or automate existing three-dimensional reconstruction techniques with secondary data collection methods (e.g. EBSD, EDS) and integrate on-the-fly segmentation tools within a virtual shared experience collaborative environment. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Customize, operate, and analyze data output from a custom automated mechanical serial-sectioning system + Apply various image and data processing techniques to produce quantitative measures of microstructure, defects and/or other features of interest + Combine materials processing knowledge to provide recommendations for additional and/or complementary characterization techniques to provide clearer understanding of microstructural arrangements + Prepare viewgraphs or written documentation to summarize work and communicate results to internal customers + Externally publish in high-impact journals and present at conferences
+ You have, or are pursuing, a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering or related technical discipline and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) + Experience in materials characterization + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE L security clearance
+ Experience with Materials Science and Engineering, metallurgy, and image processing + Strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate findings both verbally and visually + Experience in programming for data analysis and machine interfacing, not language-specific + Materials processing (beyond basic metallurgy) + Evidence of the ability to collaborate across technical disciplines and cultivate productive working relationships + Background in data science methods
We provide our customers with: + Solutions to problems involving mechanical properties of materials, both bulk properties and surface or tribological properties; + Relationships and dependencies among materials structures, composition, properties, performance, reliability and service environments; + Diagnostics and modeling that enable deep scientific investigations of material behavior and prevention of failure; and + Scientific discovery and peer-reviewed publications on material mechanics and tribology. We support various mission areas: Nuclear Deterrence, Defense Systems, Energy, and Biological Sciences.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status. : This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
