Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a postdoctoral position.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct fundamental research in heterogeneous catalysis and reaction engineering for the partial oxidation of methane to higher value chemical products. This requires the ability to evaluate catalyst performance and to develop kinetic reaction models. Critical to the project is the reactor design which will require a strong background in reactor engineering including the ability to conduct reaction kinetics and heat and mass transfer modeling of proposed reactor designs to achieve the reactor properties necessary to optimize product yields and selectivity. The project is a collaborative effort involving Argonne National Laboratory and multiple industrial partners.
  • Design, develop, and implement experimental plans for designing microreactor systems for evaluating catalyst performance to determine product yields and selectivity and to develop kinetic models as a function of reaction parameters.

  • Design, develop and implement modeling of reaction kinetics and heat and mass transfer in microreactor systems for designing microreactor systems for experimental testing and validation of catalyst performance and for engineering design studies to scale up from bench-scale microreactors to industrial pilot-scale reactor systems.
  • Analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, presents papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings or meeting sponsor reporting requirements.
  • Participate in project meetings with non-Argonne collaborators to review results and data, develop experimental work plans, and to define project goals and objectives.

We expect you to have:

  • Strong knowledge in the field of catalysis and/or reaction engineering is required.
  • Experience in conducting bench-scale catalyst testing and reactor studies is required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills is a requirement.
  • Ability to work on a collaborative project involving working with a team of scientists and engineers across more than one organization would be a benefit.
  • Requires a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field within the last three years.
