Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to develop and conduct research on fundamental understanding of system performance and performance degradation of electrode materials for high energy density lithium ion battery systems through use of structural and electrochemical characterization. The incumbent will work with Electrochemical Energy Storage department researchers and partners at on and off-site facilities to conduct experiments. 

Under the guidance of a supervisor, you will:

  • Perform synthesis, characterization and electrochemistry of lithium ion electrode and related materials for high energy battery systems.
  • The work will entail investigation of the surface and bulk structural properties including electrochemical performance and characterization using microscopy, spectroscopy and related methods.
  • Plan and conduct research on battery materials with characterization techniques that include electrochemical, structural, mechanical and chemical methods, while adhering to Laboratory and Divisional Environmental, Safety, Health/Quality Assurance practices and policies.
  • Analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, present papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings or meeting sponsor reporting requirements.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Serve as a resource person for Group members and other ANL staff personnel in solving problems and seeks technical advice from ANL staff for his/her own research effort.

We expect you to have:

  • Strong knowledge of and experimental expertise in electrochemical characterization, coin and other cell making and testing, as well as solid state synthetic methods applicable spectroscopy or microscopy methods for structural characterization.
  • Expertise in lithium ion or related electrode materials and cell making and testing.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical diagnostic methods and knowledge of handling of air-sensitive materials.
  • Skill in data processing, evaluation, and interpretation.
  • Experience in Electron Microscopy techniques will be a plus.
  • Must possess a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, or related disciplines and 0 to 1 year of experience/equivalent.
