Job Description

To perform microstructural characterization of metallic materials by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray scattering and tomography to understand microstructural evolution and deformation and failure mechanisms of materials under radiation, temperature, stress and corrosive environments. Focus will be on characterization of defects, precipitates, chemical segregation, corrosion products, and cracks in Fe-based and Ni-based alloys for nuclear energy applications. Conducts experimental work in characterizing metallic materials exposed to various environments including thermal, mechanical, corrosive, and radiation environments.

The applicant will be expected to have:

  • Knowledge and skills in transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray scattering and tomography.
  • Understanding in physical metallurgy, corrosion, mechanical properties and radiation damage of metallic materials.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in materials science and engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
