Job Description

The Low-Energy Nuclear Physics Research Group (LER) of the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks outstanding individuals to fill two open postdoctoral positions within the group. LER performs world-leading research in nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries and nuclear data as well as managing and operating world-class detector systems as part of the ATLAS accelerator facility, a DOE supported national user facility for low-energy nuclear physics research. ATLAS has recently been upgraded and provides world-unique rare isotope beams from either the CARIBU (Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade) source or our new in-flight production facility.

The successful candidates must have:

  • Recently received or near completion of his/her Ph.D. in nuclear physics or related discipline within the last 3 years
  • Experience at conceiving and executing experimental research projects and reporting the results
  • Strong background in the area of nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, nuclear astrophysics or fundamental symmetries
  • Experience with computer programming and data analysis.

In addition, for one of the two positions, a primary focus will be on utilizing the GRETINA HPGe detector array, and the successful candidate is expected to have experience in gamma-ray detectors and techniques, as well as in multi-parameter digital data acquisition systems.

Additional information on the activities of the Group and the Division can be found at https://www.anl.gov/phy. The Argonne Physics Division has programs in low energy and medium energy nuclear physics, nuclear theory, nuclear data, accelerator R&D and operates the DOE Office of Nuclear Physics National User Facility, the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS).

Both appointments will be for two years, with the possibility of an extension for up to 3 years depending on funding and performance. Interested applicants should forward a current CV along with three letters of reference to Dr. Michael P. Carpenter (carpenter@anl.gov).
