Summary

The Bloss Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant to help us investigate how the organization of synaptic connections shapes information processing in the brain. We use new tools and techniques to examine this relationship, including array tomography, electron microscopy, perturbations of neuronal activity, and behavioral analyses. The primary duties include administrative procedures, mouse brain tissue processing, imaging, and assisting with animal care related to ongoing projects. There are opportunities for independent projects depending on experience, so the ideal candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes mouse colonies, genotyping, and transgenic breeding
  • Ordering lab reagents, coordinate experiments, and analyze mouse behavior
  • Learn sample preparation methods for advanced forms of microscopy
  • Perform array tomography and electron microscopy imaging

Qualifications

  • Research Assistant I:
    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 1-3 years of related experience.
    • Mouse handling and husbandry skills preferred.
    • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form.
    • Proven ability to organize time effectively and work under time constraints, meet deadlines and prioritize work.
  • Research Assistant II:
    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 3 – 6 years of directly related experience in a Laboratory setting.
    • Advanced mouse handling and husbandry skills required.
    • Demonstrated ability in development of research protocols.
    • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project.
  • Research Assistant III:
    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 6+ years of directly related experience.
    • Advanced mouse handling, husbandry skills and biomethods required.
    • Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.
  • All levels:
    • Fundamental computer skills, including familiarity with Excel and Word.
    • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

    • Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday).
