Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Medium Energy Physics Group in the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position to conduct research in the field of experimental quantum simulation and computation.  The focus of this project is to build a quantum simulation apparatus based on neutral ytterbium atoms trapped in re-configurable optical tweezer arrays with the goal of using this apparatus to perform quantum simulations of systems relevant to nuclear physics.  The Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an active and broad-ranging program at the intersection of nuclear and atomic physics including: the search for the atomic electric dipole moment of radium-225, Argonne’s TRACER center, and high-resolution laser spectroscopy of boron-8.  Argonne’s Physics Division also leads a multi-disciplinary effort to address open problems in nuclear physics using current and future quantum devices.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, nuclear physics, or a related field.
  • Experience working with lasers, and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chambers.
  • Experience designing and building experimental control and data acquisition systems.
  • Strong background in laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms, quantum information science, ultra-cold quantum gases, or a related research area is preferred.

The position is initially for two (2) years, with the possibility of extension for up to three (3) years, depending on funding and performance. Interested applicants should apply on-line at:  https://www.anl.gov/hr/postdoctoral-applicants, to requisition #409316. In addition, please email a CV and brief statement of research interests to Michael Bishof (bishof@anl.gov) and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address.  Review of applicants will begin March 1st 2021, and the position will remain open until filled.
