Job Description

The candidate would (1) conduct interdisciplinary research on modeling, optimization and analysis of manufacturing and energy technologies/systems encompassing both supply-side and demand-side technology transformations needed for an economically sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future; (2) help with developing strategic insights and/or guidance for various project stakeholders on manufacturing and energy technology R&D and policy; and (3) communicate the outcomes of the research through internal and public reports, peer-reviewed publications, and scientific conferences. 

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in design optimization and operations research, with a demonstrated experience in systems-level thinking that draws from several scientific disciplines including engineering, economics, and environmental science.

Basic Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in mechanical or industrial engineering, operations research or related fields.

  • Research experience working on problems in the context of resilience and/or environmental sustainability of engineering technology systems.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.  

Comprehensive:

  • Experience developing mathematical or computational models for simulation and optimization of energy and/or manufacturing systems.

  • Strong command of optimization, statistics, and general engineering fundamentals.

  • Exceptional programming skills in Julia, Python, R, Java or similar languages. 

Considerable:

  • Sound general scientific knowledge, particularly as it relates to the emerging interdisciplinary field of sustainability science.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Familiarity with life cycle analysis and techno-economic analysis, particularly in the context of energy and industrial technologies.

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary research environments.

  • Experience writing successful grant proposals.

  • Ability to think strategically and use independent judgment. 

Good:

  • Knowledge of conventional and next-generation energy and manufacturing technologies, and their environmental impacts including energy use, water use, and emissions.

  • Experience developing tools and data sets for public use.

  • Ability to synthesize effective data visualizations to communicate results from complex data analyses.

  • Ability to develop evidence-based policy insights in science and technology.
