Job Description

The Process R&D and Scale Up Group in the Applied Materials Division (AMD) of Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a research and development postdoc position in the area of materials synthesis. The successful candidate will perform basic and applied research and development including materials synthesis, physical characterizations, performance evaluations, and processing of materials. We are looking for a motivated, recently graduated candidate with expertise in active battery material synthesis and characterization.

  • Experience in the synthesis of new cathode and cathode precursors using solid state, co-precipitation, hydrothermal and surface modification.

  • Experience with conducting cathode (including cathode precursor) design and synthesis experiments.

  • Experience characterizing the synthesized cathode materials.

  • Ability to evaluate the electrochemical performance of the synthesized cathode material.

  • Investigate, innovative and promising new materials.

  • Demonstrate expertise in material chemistry and synthesis related to battery active materials. 

  • Ability to use advanced analytical techniques for particle structure and property determination; demonstrate expertise in obtaining and interpreting composition-structure-property relationships.

  • High level of scientific creativity and a strong aptitude for problem-solving

  • Self-starter that can carry out tasks with minimal oversight.

  • Team oriented; willing to share with, listen to and help others.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through formal education in chemistry, materials science or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
