Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position within our Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE).

The successful candidate will perform innovative research in the Interfacial Processes Group through the use, application, and development of coherent X-ray scattering and interfacial X-ray reflectivity to understand molecular-scale processes occurring at mineral-water interfaces. These studies will also leverage various in-house capabilities including scanning probe microscopy, optical holographic interferometry, scanning electron microscopy, etc., including the interpretation of experimental data, and the presentation of results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed literature.

We expect you to have:

  • Considerable knowledge of synchrotron-based x-ray scattering techniques for in situ and operando studies to probe structure and reactivity (e.g., coherent diffraction imaging, X-ray reflectivity).

  • Considerable knowledge of interfacial science, low-temperature geochemistry or materials science; experimental techniques in interfacial science; and mathematical techniques and computer programming for data analysis.

  • Strong skill in working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment and good ability to work independently.

  • Strong skill in oral and written communication and good record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas.

  • Strong skill in the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in X-ray physics, materials science, interfacial chemistry, or geochemistry at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.

This position may require the ability to travel for work at out-of-state synchrotron facilities when required.
