Job Description

The ALCF has an opening for a postdoctoral position in machine learning and deep learning. In particular, the ALCF is exploring applications of novel AI chipsets and reduced precision techniques for faster acceleration, training, and inference of deep learning models. With the advancement of Exascale systems supporting reduced precision, and the variety of novel hardware designed to accelerate both training and inference, the ALCF is studying the application of these techinques to a variety of our science applications, including but not limited to: Computational Chemistry, Plasma Physics, High Energy Physics, analysis of Light Source data such as that from the Advanced Photon Source, Biology, Astronomy, and other science disciplines. The successful candidate will study both well known AI models, as well as develop techinques specifically to drive AI-for-Science such as classification, segmentation, recurrent networks, anomloy detection, surrogate models, Baysian models, and uncertainty quantification.The successful candidate will be expected to implement models on cutting edge AI hardware and measure performance improvements as well as quantify and understand differences in model accuracy and output, especially in the context of reduced precision training and inference.

  • PhD in a physical science, computer science, or engineering or related field completed within the last 3 years, or soon to be completed.
  • Comprehensive experience programming in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with machine learning methods and deep learning frameworks, including tensorflow, pytorch.
  • Experience in heterogenous programming and GPU programming in the machine learning context is valuable.
  • Experience in profiling and performance analysis is valuable but not required.
  • Ability to create, maintain, and support high-quality software is essential.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to work with and contribute to domain-specific software and models.
  • Experience with version control software such as git is essential.
  • Good communications skills and previous experience in writing technical papers and presentations at national and international symposia is expected.
