Postdoctoral Appointee: Industrial Decarbonization – Systems Analysis

Argonne National Laboratory

Lemont, IL

Job posting number: #7079340 (Ref:410196)

Posted: June 2, 2021

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The candidate would conduct interdisciplinary research on manufacturing sector energy use modeling, optimization, and analysis, encompassing both supply-side and demand-side technology transformations needed for industrial decarbonization and sustainable manufacturing.  The candidate would be expected to conduct high-impact research in two primary areas.

Research area 1: The candidate would be responsible for the development of a new open-source energy systems optimization modeling tool or adapting an existing modeling tool with the goal of evaluating decarbonization pathways for industrial sectors including cement, iron & steel, chemicals, petroleum, and pulp & paper manufacturing.  The emphasis will be on providing appropriate high-level abstractions of both incumbent manufacturing technologies and processes currently in use, as well as prospective energy efficiency measures, process electrification technologies, low-carbon fuels, feedstocks, and energy sources, and CO2 capture and utilization technologies that could help achieve 2030 and 2050 industrial decarbonization targets.  The research would build upon existing manufacturing energy use datasets and tools used by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).  This is a multi-year project that would involve significant collaboration with researchers from other DOE Nationals Laboratories and the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office.

Research area 2: The candidate would conduct research in logistics optimization with immediate applications in (1) electric vehicle battery recycling networks and (2) transportation and storage of CO2 captured from stationary sources (industry and power generation) for utilization and storage.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in optimization and operations research, with a demonstrable experience in systems-level thinking that draws from several disciplines including engineering, economics, and environmental science.  The candidate is expected to communicate the outcomes of their research and analysis extensively through peer-reviewed publications, internal and public reports, and presentations at scientific conferences.

Responsibilities:

Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection: All activities, as they apply to work performed by self or by personnel under supervision, will be executed in compliance with ES&H and security responsibilities established by Argonne National Laboratory's ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security policies, work rules, and safe practices.
