Argonne is seeking a transportation systems modeler to extend and apply our high-performance, agent-based freight transportation systems model in a variety of research applications that measure mobility, energy consumption, emissions, sustainability, environmental justice, and other impacts. The freight model is integrated in our group’s transportation system simulation framework, POLARIS. The selected candidate will work with a growing team of freight researchers to improve our core models of firm behavior, driver behavior and freight-related decision-making. The software simulates large-scale transportation systems—both urban freight and long-haul/multimodal—to analyze establishment and driver responses to potential future trends in the economy, land use, mobility, connectivity and autonomy (CACC/CAV), delivery modes, vehicle technologies (hydrogen fueling, electrification, etc.), and so on. Decision makers in the public and private sectors rely on our findings to inform decisions on investments and management strategies. The core algorithms of the freight model include agent-based models of discrete choices regarding trade partnerships, transport and logistics path choices, inventory-theoretic shipment size selection, a large-scale vehicle routing problem heuristic, and others. The candidate will contribute to one or more areas of the research stream: data preparation and analysis, development of models (econometric, optimization, machine learning, …), model implementation in the C++ POLARIS code base, calibration and validation, and/or application and scenario analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop models and software implementations of multi-modal freight transportation systems

  • Analyze data to support model development

  • Develop new methodologies for simulating firm behavior, transportation system operations and control, or other activities

  • Interact with software developers on implementing new algorithms and improving performance of existing algorithms

  • Simulate transportation system impacts using POLARIS, in the context of changing trends

  • Work under minimal supervision

Basic Requirements:

  • PhD Degree in transportation, operations research, mechanical or environmental engineering, economics, or a related field.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Knowledge of freight transportation systems model development and application, including activity-based or agent-based travel demand modeling.

  • In-depth knowledge of one or more quantitative fields, such as econometrics, optimization, or machine learning.

  • Experience in data collection, processing and analysis.

  • Experience with C++ for the Windows and/or Linux platform.

  • Experience with statistical modeling software such as R, Stata, GAUSS, or standard softwares in another domain (Julia, Gurobi, …).

  • Experience with other common open-source platforms is desirable (Python, QGIS, or others).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.
