Position Summary
The Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL), part of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University at Buffalo (UB),seeks an individual with structural dynamics, vibrations or related testing expertise for a Structural and Test Engineer position beginning September 2021. The successful candidate will actively engage with CSEE and SEAS faculty and graduate students in preparing and executing experiments in research projects, as well as serve as the point person for the service-to-industry program.

Administrative duties include but are not limited to:
Support CSEE faculty in attracting new sponsored research to SEESL for the benefit of CSEE and SEAS faculty members. This effort may include, but is not limited to: validating SEESL equipment specifications; verifying the feasibility of proposed project scopes; estimating staff labor requirements; scheduling work in SEESL.
In coordination with other SEESL administrative staff, actively manage all laboratory projects, including coordinating schedules with government and industry sponsors; ensuring that testing protocols and established laboratory practice are observed by all participants
Assist with the training of staff, students and visiting researchers in safe usage of laboratory space and equipment
Actively solicit new industry partnerships to sustain and expand SEESL’s vibrant industry service program
Serve as primary liaison for industry clients, from first contact through report delivery
Maintain contacts with past and current industry clients
Develop industry service proposals and cost estimates
Coordinate with CSEE and SEAS administration on project time tracking and invoicing
Co-administer the laboratory’s bi-annual ISO/IAS 17025 accreditation assessment visits

Technical duties include but are not limited to:
Work with faculty investigators, graduate students and industry clients to develop and check proposed test model drawings, specifications and test plans
Assist faculty investigators, graduate students and industry clients with design and development of test fixtures and interface components for the purpose of attaching test models to shake tables or reaction wall/floor
Prior to fabrication, verify accuracy of shop drawings produced by research and industry clients
Develop (and assist other staff members or students with developing) project-specific custom software code, using platforms such as MatLab, DaDiSP, Labview, etc.; maintain a repository of custom-developed code
Support SEESL staff on operations of test equipment (hardware and software), including earthquake simulators, structural actuator controllers, and data acquisition systems
Assist SEESL staff with sensor calibration and records management
Reduce and analyze experimental data acquired during industry projects, and write or co-author laboratory test reports
Develop white papers highlighting SEESL capabilities for the purposes of marketing such capabilities to new potential sponsors

SEESL is a unique world-class experimental facility, staffed by highly skilled and motivated engineers and technicians, and home to a wide variety of test facilities including twin 6-DOF earthquake simulators, large-scale servo-controlled structural test actuators, a geotechnical laminar box, a wind tunnel, a high-temperature structural test system and advanced controls for real-time hybrid simulation. SEESL carries out research sponsored by a broad spectrum of agencies including National Science Foundation, US Departments of Energy, Defense and Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, New York State Department of Transportation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and industry partners.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
The candidate must have a track record in large-scale experimental testing in structural engineering or structural dynamics and vibrations.
Eagerness to work collaboratively with faculty and graduate students with a wide range of academic specialties, cultures and backgrounds is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with hydraulic test systems and controls, instrumentation and data acquisition is highly desirable.
Familiarity with seismic qualification testing and standards is a plus.
A working understanding of mechanical fabrication processes and CAD modeling is preferred.
Professional licensure in a related field, or a willingness to procure it within two years, is desirable.
