Job Description

The Single Cell Core (SCC) offers Harvard Medical School researchers with technical and project design expertise in single cell genomics, as well as help with implementation. The SCC offers state-of-the art commercial technologies, as well as academic innovations in single cell genomics not yet commercially supported. We are looking for a qualified individual to join the SCC leadership team. Within this dynamic and fast-paced environment, the candidate will support SCC users in designing and implement single cell genomic experiments, and help to evaluate and develop novel methods. This is an opportunity to become a leader at the forefront of next-generation sequencing methods, and gain broad experience in the ways that such methods are used by world-leading researchers.

Position Summary: The Single Cell Core (SCC) at Harvard Medical School is seeking an Associate Director with Molecular Biology and/or Genomics experience to join our group. The Associate Director will consult users on the design and implementation of SCC projects; lead the optimization and validation of new technologies and procedures; and will work with the Senior Research Technician and the Director of the SCC to carry out experiments and generate data from various genomics-oriented workflows. Direct prior experience with single cell genomics is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will receive training on all the techniques used by the core. The candidate must have a track record in scientific project management, experimental design and trouble-shooting; be creative and detail oriented; have excellent communication skills; have a can-do mentality; and work well in a team. They will be expected to represent the Core within Harvard Medical School and at relevant scientific meetings. This position gives an opportunity to learn core facility management and grow towards leadership roles.

Key Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with the Director to manage the daily operations and long-term strategy of the SCC.
• Consult with a wide range of research groups on how to design and conduct successful single cell experiments using commercial and in-house technologies.
• Hands-on implementation of single-cell experiments, from sample handling to preparing NGS libraries.
• Experimental evaluation of new single cell applications to determine whether they are appropriate to be incorporated into the SCC.
• Carry out training and outreach to the local biomedical research community
• Present results from core work at local, national and international meetings.
• Document and communicate results and progress to the SCC Scientific Advisory Board.
• Supervise/mentor staff and students in basic laboratory techniques.
• Collaborate with the sequencing and bioinformatics cores for analysis and troubleshooting.

Basic Qualifications:
• PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or other related fields.
• Clear understanding of basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA purification, PCR/RT-PCR amplification, primer designing etc.). Experience in cell biology and assay development.
• Demonstrated interest in collaboration and ability to work in a team, problem solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical and scientific issues
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Strong communication and interpersonal skills
