Job Description

The Magnetic Materials (MM) group of the X-ray Science Division (XSD) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) advances x-ray techniques and instrumentation for frontier studies of electronic and magnetic materials. In preparation for the upcoming APS upgrade and its new beamline Polar, we are developing linear- and circular dichroic ptychography as an imaging tool to investigate electronic and magnetic domains and domain walls at the nanoscale. We are currently seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Appointee position to amplify this development with focus on x-ray experimentation and software developments to enable 2D and 3D reconstructions of real space domains from dichroic coherent diffraction images using ptychography. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Microscopy (MIC) and Computational X-ray Science (CXS) groups in developing algorithms for reconstruction of electronic orbital and magnetization densities in selected systems with large dichroic contrast commensurate with coherent fraction of the current APS. The candidate will also work closely with Beamline Controls group on the implementation of interferometric methods to compensate for instabilities that may affect correlation between sample position and corresponding diffraction patterns during ptychography scans. It is expected that experiments will be conducted at APS beamlines as well as at other light sources, so long as COVID related travel restrictions are relaxed.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Experience with coherent diffraction imaging experiments (XPCS, Bragg CDI, ptychography), x-ray resonant scattering, or x-ray dichroic spectroscopies.
Strong interest to develop reconstruction algorithms to recover real space images of domain structure from coherent diffraction images. Experience with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches not required but is a plus.
Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Preferred experience:

Conception and design of coherent diffraction imaging experiments and development of reconstruction algorithms.
Other: Requires a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science and related disciplines
