Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to collaborate with a diverse community of senior researchers in the Solar Fuels Laboratory within the Hydrogen and Materials Science Department. Our research team develops novel hybridized thermochemical-electrochemical processes for splitting water to produce sustainable hydrogen using low-temperature liquid metal alloy solutions. We strive to develop a comprehensive understanding of alloy oxidation chemistries in order to engineer demonstration reactors that can be integrated into concentrating solar power receiver platforms. Our research emphasizes experimental studies of the interactions of gas-phase water and hydrogen with liquid metals, as well as the electrochemical reduction of oxides in molten salts, using unique, custom facilities for performing experiments in multiphase environments. The research is performed in a diverse, multidisciplinary teaming environment that includes interactions with microscopists, engineers, synthetic chemists, and computational scientists. Our research activities have high-visibility both nationally and internationally, thus successful candidates require strong presentation and writing skills.
+ PhD in chemical or mechanical engineering, or closely related field + Extensive hands-on laboratory experience and capable of independent and safe laboratory practices + Evidence of research expertise in the form of technical publications and conference presentations
+ Experience with one or more of the following fields: heat transfer, thermodynamics, high-temperature electrochemistry, kinetics, modeling (including thermokinetic modeling), oxide chemistry, computational methods + Strong understanding of the structural properties of liquid metal alloys + Background in high temperature and/or solar thermochemical processes + Proficiency in the development and use of diagnostic platforms such as mass spectrometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, laser-based approaches to monitoring chemical composition in multiphase environments + Inclusive research approach

The Hydrogen and Materials Science team provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation on the interaction of hydrogen (and its isotopes) with all types of materials. We perform scientific and engineering research to advance hydrogen energy technologies and support Sandia’s NNSA mission for the Nation's Nuclear Weapons Enterprise and DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO). Our work covers a broad range of areas: analyzing hydrogen’s long-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and initiating hydrogen storage and fuel cell market transformation strategies to bring technological advancements towards broad-based commercial availability.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
