Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral Appointee to support one or more large DOE Gen3 Concentrating Solar Power projects. The selected applicant(s) will apply their expertise in mechanical engineering fundamentals, including thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and solid mechanics. Projects could include sCO2 heat exchangers, thermal energy storage from CS, solar reactor/receivers, particle based systems or molten salt based systems, and heliostat field optimization. Use your passion and creativity to build groundbreaking engineering solutions alongside a multi-disciplinary renewable energy team of expert scientists and engineers. Your work, centered on concentrating solar applications could ultimately include a span of activities we do for other mission areas at the Labs. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Independently conduct and deliver your own R&D activities or projects under leadership of senior staff. These activities and projects may be theoretical, computational and/or experimental. These activities will often require working in teams that can include partners from other institutions; + Work with Sandia’s technology transfer and licensing professionals to move successful R&D from the Labs to industry; + Assist or lead development of proposals to seek funding from sponsors and customers for new or ongoing R&D projects in CSP; + Disseminate R&D outcomes and the departments capabilities in various forms including journal article publications and by presenting papers at national and international conferences; + Represent Sandia and the department in national or international committees relating to conferences, standards and publications.
+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant STEM field, with demonstrated expertise in the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and/or solid mechanics + Excellent technical writing skills as demonstrated in scientific publication(s) + Prior academic or professional experience in mechanical design and generation of engineering drawings
+ Demonstrated ability to generate CFD and/or FEA models to analyze thermal and/or mechanical components + Well-developed communication, oral presentation, and leadership skills + Prior experience in Ansys Fluent, Ansys Mechanical, SolidWorks, Engineering Equation Solver, MATLAB, and LabVIEW + Willingness to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team with various backgrounds + Capable of communicating with and supervising the work of fabricators, machinists, welders, and electricians + Experience in the design and operation of thermal equipment where hardware is taken through concept generation, design, manufacturing, and testing + Knowledgeable of traditional manufacturing techniques (e.g., welding, machining, bending, brazing, sheet metal forming) + Experience in design, operation, measurement, and control with high-temperature systems + Experience in bulk solids (particle) handling, heating, and transport

Our Concentrated Solar Technologies Department located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, develops Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems in partnership with DOE, industry partners, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to facilitate the successful development and market deployment of utility scale solar electricity, sustainable solar fuels, and industrially relevant solar thermal chemistry. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
